Pumpkin Spice Bread – White Chocolate Streusel

November 28, 2015 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

Pumpkin Spice Bread with White Chocolate Streusel | yesilovewalmart.com

Pumpkin Spice Bread with White Chocolate Streusel | yesilovewalmart.comThis pumpkin spice bread with white chocolate streusel is a winner. But, I didn’t actually win the ribbon. My youngest son, who was 7, did.

For our county fair, his sisters were planning to enter lots of categories. So, he knew immediately what he wanted to take. He insisted on either banana or pumpkin bread; because they are his two all-time favorite recipes that I make.

I insisted that I didn’t have any day-old bananas, a can of pumpkin, or time to help him. We had already mapped out our time in the precious few hours before everything was due to be driven to the fair.

Being the mosquito he is, he pestered me with his oh so cute hazel eyes and a “Paleeez?” Don’t you always cave in to the youngest child in your family? Yeah, I caved.

I agreed to buy the pumpkin, but he had to make it himself. He was sure he could handle it.

That boy, with a little help here and there, actually made it and we dropped it off at the fair. Then we fervently prayed all the way home that everything we made would win blue ribbons.

On the first day they allowed visitors, we went. We could have passed out from our collective anxiety – dying to see what everyone won. Everyone there was very hush hush as they inspected who won what ribbon. But, there was lots of excitement from my kids though. “I won this. I won that…”

Suddenly, my youngest comes barreling toward me, his face looking like he had just caught a BIG fish,

“MOOOOOOOM!!!! I got a big one!!”

I thought, “What in the world does that mean, in non-fish speaking terms?”

He pulled me through the exhibit areas over to the food cases. And there it was – A blue ribbon

AND a supersized blue rosette ribbon that said “OUTSTANDING ENTRY”.

Right then and there I knew I had the best pumpkin spice bread in the world!

Uh, I mean in the county. Regardless, one of those judges thought a lot of this recipe. I hope you do too.

It’s very moist. You definitely taste the pumpkin and spices. It’s dense, so you feel like you’re eating a muffin. The white chocolate streusel gives it an extra sweet crunch. The recipe makes three loaves.

So you can eat a lot of it!

OR

be good and share a loaf with someone you love.

It’s crazy easy to make. My 7 year old made it. Boy, did he make it big.

Here are the ingredients. You probably have most of them at home already except the white chocolate, can of pumpkin, and pumpkin pie spice.

Pumpkin Spice Bread with White Chocolate Streusel - Ingredients (picture)

  • Lindt Classic Recipe White Chocolate, 4.4 oz. $2.68
  • Walmart Grocery

Preheat your oven to 350°F.

Using shortening, grease the sides and bottom of three 4½” x 8½” loaf pans. Combine sugar, oil, and eggs in a large bowl. Using a mixer, blend them together until well combined.

Pumpkin Spice Bread with White Chocolate Streusel - Bowl with MixerTo that bowl, add the remaining ingredients. Blend with the mixer on medium speed, scraping the sides, until fully combined and thick.

Equally divide the batter into the three loaf pans. Give each pan a little sideways jiggle to even out the batter.

Pumpkin Spice Bread with White Chocolate Streusel - Pouring MixtureTopping

In a medium bowl, combine the topping ingredients by using a pastry cutter or fork until crumbly. Divide up and sprinkle mixture over the batter in each pan.

Pumpkin Spice Bread with White Chocolate Streusel - OatmealBake all three pans on the middle to lower rack in the oven for 50 minutes. Test it by inserting a toothpick. If it comes out clean, it’s done.

If not, continue baking and checking every 5 minutes for up to 10 minutes more. Don’t overbake. Let it cool completely before removing from pans. Makes 3 loaves.

Pumpkin Spice Bread with White Chocolate Streusel – Recipe

I hope you win a ribbon with it someday. : )

See you at Walmart!

Pumpkin Pie – Tasty Choice

November 26, 2015 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

Pumpkin Pie | yesilovewalmart.com

You’ve been invited to Thanksgiving dinner.  No planning a menu, buying all of the ingredients, figuring out how long it will take for your bird to cook, stressing in the kitchen for hours over every single dish… You’re the lucky, the few, the guest. YESSSSS!!

So you’re enjoying your undeserved status as a guest and not giving one single thought to the big meal. In fact, you’re probably searching the Internet for Black Friday, I mean, Thursday Night After You’ve Eaten Another Round deals.

It isn’t until Thanksgiving morning that you realize you offered to bring the pumpkin pie. What were you thinking? A pie takes effort and this is supposed to be a holiday, right?

A pie takes effort and this is supposed to be a holiday, right? (Tell that to the host. I’m sure she’s lounging in a recliner with her feet up watching the big game – NOT.) You’ve got to deliver – and quick.

You’re in luck because my favorite store will be open and happy to help. The pie you’re going to want to bring is this one from their bakery.

The good ol’ reliable pumpkin pie. If I ever see it on the day later (don’t you dare use the word day old) rack – I have to buy it. So if you’re ever looking at an empty rack – it’s because I took it before you got there.

The pie filling has a wonderful amount of spices. The filling is thick, flavorful, and has a nice smooth texture. It stacks up well with any other store’s pumpkin pie.

The pie crust is a good basic crust. When you taste a bite with both the crust and filling – now that’s a solid marriage. They complete each other. You’d be proud to serve this pie fresh or day later.

Pumpkin Pie | yesilovewalmart.comPumpkin Pie – The Bakery™ 24 oz. $3.48

Pumpkin Pie – The Bakery™  40 oz. (IN STORES ONLY) $5.98

It’s is my youngest son’s favorite pie. He cuts a piece right out of the fridge and picks it up like he’s eating a brownie. No plate, fork, warmth, or topping for him – no sirree, just the pie Ma’am. I love mine warm with whipped topping on it and dripping down the side. However, you like to eat it, it’s good.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.  Enjoy a big piece of pie or two!

See you at Walmart!

Holiday Hostess Gifts – Spoil Her

November 25, 2015 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

Holiday Hostess Gifts | yesilovewalmart.com

We’ve been blessed to share a holiday meal with friends, for the last several years. And we know she’s going to cook pretty much the same dishes. But we are so glad she does – delicious and filling. We eat seconds and thirds and fourths… (sh!)

You want to settle into their comfy leather recliners and not get up again. If I could put a rocket on their recliner and fly home, life would be perfect. Too bad we have to drive three hours home with four kiddos in the back – that’s a whole other level of fun.

Talk about gratitude. We are so thankful for her cooking.

You don’t want to go empty handed to a holiday feast, so here are some ideas for hostess gifts you could bring.

Holiday Hostess Gifts | yesilovewalmart.comThis pretty gift (of nuts and the cracker) was really easy to put together. The hardest part was picking just the right container.

Walmart has lots of choices for canisters. But I was really impressed with this glass one in housewares. The top is an attractive acacia wood. Its earthiness goes really well with the nuts. It has a rubber seal so it should stay very airtight. It’s about six inches wide.

Holiday Hostess Gifts - Nuts | yesilovewalmart.comMainstays™ Seafood & Nut Cracker (IN STORES ONLY) $4.97

Hines Mixed Nuts (IN STORES ONLY) $3.98 each

Better Homes and Gardens™ Acacia Canister,  48 oz. (IN STORES ONLY) $9.44

This nutcracker looks like it could do some killer cracking. Can be used for seafood too, it says. They sell bags of nuts in this mixed variety or each variety alone. You could get a bag of just almonds if you wanted.

I filled the canister with the nuts (took two bags) and tied the cracker on with a bow. That’s when all of a sudden my kids decided they LOVE nuts. And they really wanted to crack open their own nuts. Hint: why give them away when we can eat them? I know it’s tough, but you have to actually give the gift to the host – not keep it for yourself.

Holiday Hostess Gifts - Throws | yesilovewalmart.comBetter Homes and Gardens™ Micro Sculpted Velvet Plush Throw – Cheetah (IN STORES ONLY) $9.97

Better Homes and Gardens™ Velvet Plush Throw (Reverses to Sherpa) – Black & White Damask $14.93

Walmart has outdone themselves this year in the throw blanket department. They have quite a variety – they’re all pretty, upscale, and SOFT. I’m talking stick-your-face-in-a-baby-lamb’s-wool kind of soft. Once you’ve touched this there’s no going back to a regular throw.

These are two I fell in love with. The damask one is thicker than the brown one so the price is a little higher. You may find them in the housewares area or in the Christmas beauty gifts area.

Holiday Hostess Gifts - Mums (3) | yesilovewalmart.comAnother nice gift is this indoor mum. I saw lots of outdoor mums that were suffering in the garden center from cold damage. I was about to leave when I spotted these glorious plants. They were so fresh, colorful, and large (about 2 feet tall). The price is downright ridiculous – $6.88.

Holiday Hostess Gifts - Mums | yesilovewalmart.comIndoor Mums (IN STORES ONLY) $6.88

I have bought plants in the winter and kept them alive until I could plant them outdoors in the spring. It doesn’t always work, but I try.

liday Hostess Gifts - Apple Mango - Poured | yesilovewalmart.comWe love sparkling cider. This brand sells several flavors during the holidays. We bought four flavors thinking we’d love them all.

Holiday Hostess Gifts - Apple Mango | yesilovewalmart.comMartinelli’s™ Sparkling Apple-Mango (IN STORES ONLY) $2.88

Thank heavens for apple-mango, which we liked – a lot. It had a medium flavor of mango, not too heavy, not too light. We are fans of mango though, so keep that in mind.

But, don’t judge it by the first sip, have a few before you give it a verdict. It’s surprising at first and then you warm up to it. This would be an especially great gift for a family with children.

We tried three other flavors, but were disappointed with how they tasted. The apple-peach was very heavy on the peach flavor, almost like it was syrupy. The apple-pear tasted like over-ripe pears. And the apple-cranberry was squeeze-your-lips-in-like-a-fish super tart. So, apple-mango saved the day.

Holiday Hostess Gifts - Candles | yesilovewalmart.comMainstays™ Candle 11.5 oz. – Mulled Cider $3.00

Mainstays™ Candle 11.5 oz. – Hazelnut Cream, French Toast $3.00 (IN STORES ONLY)

These three candles really smelled like fall to us – we instantly liked their scents in the store. We have been known to toast marshmallows over these candles.  Each candle has three wicks and are about three inches wide.

The Mulled Cider smells like warm apple cider/wassail. You definitely pick up on the cinnamon, other spices, and cooked apples in a wassail. The cider was a teensy bit on the strong side for us.

The Hazelnut is like smelling a cappuccino. My daughter thought it reminded her of a hazelnut cookie. It was not as strong, more on the neutral side.

Ah, now the French Toast was our winner. It smells like my kind of French toast, where you definitely taste the cinnamon and nutmeg but not too heavy on the spices. It was a nice smell to us – not overwhelming. It fell sort of between the cider and hazelnut. We were quite taken with it.

I’m sure your host will be thrilled if you want to spoil her – and these items give you some good options.

We hope you eat some delicious food during the holidays – go easy on the 3rd and 4th helpings ; – )

See you at Walmart!

Scarecrow Cross Stitch Towel

November 24, 2015 by Jennifer 5 Comments

Scarecrow Cross Stitch Towel | yesilovewalmart.com

Scarecrow Cross Stitch Towel | yesilovewalmart.comI adore this happy little scarecrow. It will look so pretty in your bathroom – up where no one can use it! When you put your heart into stitching this little guy you’re probably not going to want little hands touching him. But if you like to live dangerously, you can set it out to be used. I adapted it from www.leschroniquesdefrimousse.com.

Before I learned how to cross stitch I remember thinking it would be way too complicated for me. It looked too intricate and delicate. I only knew how to sew, not do fancy stitches.

Well, my friends, in the embroidery world, cross stitch is ridiculously easy. All you’re doing is making an X. And with video tutorials online, a cat could cross stitch. Ok – let’s not get carried away…

Cross stitch uses a special fabric that is woven in such a way that you see a “square” marked by four dots in each corner. You connect the dots with single stitches to make an X – super easy. Plus, there is a pattern chart that shows you exactly where to put each stitch and what color it should be.

Scarecrow Cross Stitch Towel (with pumpkin pie)If you’re a guest at a Thanksgiving dinner, this towel would be a really special thank you gift. It would be nice tied with a pretty ribbon on a bag of artisan bread or a pie. If the host woke up early and prepared multiple dishes for Thanksgiving dinner she’s absolutely deserving of this towel.

She probably would prefer it was tied to a bottle of her favorite wine, maybe even a box of wine, all right, a case.   But hey, you pick the gift. If you’re a beginner and this is your first attempt at cross stitching, just buy your own deserving gift for when it’s done.

Here are the supplies you’ll need and all can be either found at Walmart or ordered through their site to store.

Scarecrow Cross Stitch - Supplies

  • Charles Craft Estate Diamond Weave Towel, 16” x 24” – white, 16 count (Order this “site to store”) $9.76
  • DMC Tapestry Hand Needles, Size 22 – 6 Pkg  $4.19
  • DMC Embroidery floss (in the colors listed on the chart) IN STORES ONLY 33¢ each

Towel: Not all cross stitch towels are created equal. This diamond weave by Charles Craft is in a class above. The bottom is hemmed unlike some velour towels where the strands hang down. Also the terry part of the towel has a nice diamond weave pattern on it. It’s a bright white. You’ll most likely need to order this “site to store” (order it on the Web site and have it sent to the local store in your area). The Walmart I visited with a fabric department didn’t keep it in stock.

Another thing I love about these towels is that the label has a pretty cross stitch pattern of a bird inside. Here are two from my towels.

Scarecrow Cross Stitch Patterns - Estate TowelNeedle: I happen to like size 22 for my tapestry needles but there are other sizes that would work fine. It just has to have a blunt tip and a big eye.

Floss: With any cross stitch you can either follow the colors suggested on the chart or choose your own. Maybe yours is a girl scarecrow and she’s wearing pink overalls. You should love the colors you sew with so feel free to change them.

Hoop: Using a hoop to hold your fabric taut is a personal preference so I’ll leave that up to you.

Here’s the detailed information you’ll need to make it.

Scarecrow Cross Stitch Towel – Pattern, Color Chart

Scarecrow Cross Stitch Towel Beginner – Directions

Scarecrow Cross Stitch Towel Advanced – Directions

Scarecrow Cross Stitch Towel - Full LengthCross stitching this towel went pretty quickly. Changing colors is what takes the most time. My kids kept checking in to see how he was coming along and agreed that he was adorable.

I hope you take the time to stitch him and that he makes you smile.

See you at Walmart!

Fall Decor – Pumpkins, Flowers, Candles

November 23, 2015 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

Fall Decor | yesilovewalmart.com

Can you ever have enough pumpkins in the house when decorating for fall? Uh, no. You even need them out on your front porch, right? Of course! In the bathrooms too! They’re such an easy way to sprinkle fall around your house.

Fall Decor | yesilovewalmart.comCrackle Pumpkin IN STORES ONLY $5.44

These pumpkins caught my eye right away. They come in green and dark orange too. The one on the left is about six inches tall.   I love the pretty iridescent glitter on them. If Cinderella could buy pumpkins at Walmart she’d go straight for these.

Fall Decor - Potted FlowersPotted Flowers IN STORES ONLY $9.98

There were lots of different kinds of these potted faux flowers. Very nicely done and just the right size. It looks serious in that pot – but trust me, this brings such warmth and love into a room. The colors are so vibrant.

Fall Decor - Votive Rail (Pinecones and Leaves)Better Homes and Gardens™ 3-cup Votive Rail (Pine Cones and Leaves) IN STORES ONLY $9.88

This would be absolutely lovely with candles burning in the middle of the dining room table at Thanksgiving. Yeah, I know, would be lovely. Of course, I wouldn’t have anything with a real flame on my table until my boys were oh, about 30 years old.

Fall Decor - Pre-Lit PumpkinPre-Lit Pumpkin IN STORES ONLY $6.98

This pumpkin is about 7 inches tall. It has small and delicate lights through it. It has a battery pack for either AA or AAA in the back. I’m sure it’s stunning when the lights are on.

I have to mention the type of batteries because I’m completely over and done with cell batteries. I don’t know why they don’t sell cell (are you ok?, sorry, untwist your tongue) batteries that come in a vitamin-size bottle, at a low price, and with ONE number on it that is universally used. AAAGH!

Ok, I’m calm now. Thank heavens this beautiful pumpkin does NOT use cell batteries.

Pumpkin Candle HolderBetter Homes and Gardens™ Metal Pumpkin Tealight Candle Holder $9.88

This metal pumpkin is about 8 inches tall. It would also be pretty on the table at Thanksgiving. You can maneuver the foliage around to your liking because they are on wires.

I could swear I saw one that was gold drive off in someone’s cart. Of course, I looked around and there weren’t any more gold ones.

Drats when that happens. BUT when I was driving around, people sure were checking out all this beautiful fall décor in my cart. So, back at you babe.

I hope a store near you still has these on the shelves as they tend to sell out fairly quickly. May your house bring you joy as you decorate for fall and Thanksgiving.   Don’t set your table on fire. : )

See you at Walmart!

First Post – Yes I Love Walmart

November 22, 2015 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

First Post | yesilovewalmart.com

First Post

I can’t believe the day is finally here. Crazy, right?

I’ve been thinking of writing a blog for quite a while now.  I first thought it would only be about cooking and crafts.  But, nothing seemed to be the right fit for me.

So, we started talking about how my recipes would have mostly Great Value™ items.  I’ve shopped at Walmart for many years and always enjoyed their products.

Ah ha!  My lightbulb went ON.  (Yes, it does go on now and then.)  I finally had my fit, something that got me really excited.  My blog would be… this.  Exactly this. I’m so blessed my family just listened and nodded.  No one shot me down.  In fact, they started to get pretty excited about my ideas too.  They all wanted to help be a part of it.  Woo hoo we were on our way…

You can expect two main things from me on this blog:

– I’m going to be real. I’m not going to try to impress you or be someone I’m not.

– I’m going to give you my best every single time. Because, well, you deserve it.

So, this is a special day.   I’m glad you are here.

When I started working on this blog, my daughter created a handmade card to encourage me.  Here is what she said:

First Post (letter)

I know, I’m going to cry remembering when I found it in my sock drawer. (Isn’t that where you find your surprise cards?!) She is so sweet.

I hope someone in your life encourages you.

See you at Walmart!
